Repackaging “The Box”

It’s difficult to read the inscription at the top of this quaint building in the photograph, but this restored mixed-use structure was once home to the Traverse City Cigar Box Company. It was built in 1920 and is one of my favorite historic structures in the city – though I am not sure about the current exterior paint color choice. Today, it is known as “The Box.”

While it is hard to imagine Traverse City being home to a company that produced cigar boxes, according to the a 2013 article about the building in the Northern Express, there were ten cigar factories in the area in 1906 – who would have thunk it?
